Kadidja Sangare has been named the SAC Varsity Gems Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after three personal best performances in two days at the VMI Invitational this past weekend.

On Friday, Jan. 13, Kadidja Sangare acquired a national provisional mark in the 60-meter hurdles by securing bronze in the event with a prelims time of 8.85 seconds. Her efforts resulted in a new personal record in the event.

Sangare is a freshman for the Eagles from South Holland, Netherlands. The newcomer left the VMI Invitational with an NCAA provisional mark and a spot on the podium.

Sangare placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday, Jan. 14 with a new personal best of 8.81 seconds. Sangare also found the podium in the women's long jump to best another personal record and garner a third-place finish with a clearance of 6.00 meters.

"For Kadidja as a freshman to execute not just one jump, but several great ones, shows a degree of consistency that shows someone who will only continue to get better. Her quiet confidence is definitely a strength," Carson-Newman head track and field coach David Needs said.

Along with Sangare, Sade De Sousa was recognized as Varsity Gems Women's Track Athlete of the Week. Both women's performances at the VMI Invitational granted Carson-Newman the opportunity to sweep the women's track and field athlete of the week awards this week.
