Investigators have identified a 13 year old male juvenile who is a student at Jefferson Middle School as the caller in todays hoax shooting call. Charges are pending in this case.
Today at approximately 1:50, a caller reported to 911 that there had been a shooting at Jefferson Middle School, and 911 notified the school of the call and dispatched officers from the Jefferson City Police Department and the Sheriffs Office to the scene. The building was cleared and deemed a hoax. We want to commend the faculty, staff and School Resource Deputy at Jefferson Middle School for their prompt response by securing the students inside the building. Unfortunately there is a growing problem of hoax incidents targeting schools across our country by calling in shootings and triggering an active shooter response and protocols by Law Enforcement. At this time our investigation reveals that the call was generated from a cell phone. Investigators are working with Jefferson County E911 in an attempt to identify the caller by reviewing audio recordings of the 911 call. This is an active investigation.
